ACM Book Club Discussion

Monday November 15

6:00 PM  –  7:00 PM

For our inaugural read, we’ll be discussing the life of Dewey Gatson, aka Jack de Soto, aka Rajo Jack, a West Coast outlaw racer in the 1920s. Despite being an outstanding driver and creative mechanic, he was barred from AAA sanctioned races which were strictly segregated at the time. In The Brown Bullet, journalist Bill Poehler uncovers the life of a long-forgotten trailblazer and the great lengths he took to even get on the track, showing ultimately how Rajo Jack proved to a generation that a black man could compete with some of the greatest white drivers of his era, winning some of the biggest races of the day.

We are especially excited to announce that the author, Bill Poehler, a journalist and racing enthusiast from Oregon, will be taking part in the book discussion and available to answer questions participants may have.
